Background of the Transport Research at DLR

In the division of transport research the German Aerospace Center DLR transfers expertise and technological innovations from aerospace research to problems in the area of transport management. The initial organizational process is supported by the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The BMBF sets great value on the creation of scientific networks with emphasis on the solution of transport problems.

Research areas

The DLR transport division is divided into two main research areas „mobility and transportation” and “automobile and transportation technology”. The research and development activities in “mobility and transportation” are aimed at the prediction of future developments, at solutions for the management problems of increasing traffic and at the development of models and methods to collect and process transportation data. The research and development activities in “automobile and transportation technology” concentrate on methods for automobile design and assessment, driver - assistance-systems and environmentally friendly and resource saving technologies. The working group Transport safety located at the Institute od Aerospace Medicine in Cologne, Germany, is engaged in the development of methods to prevent fatigue in transportation.

Services

These research activities provide support for decision processes when planning investments into infrastructure at both state and national levels and when introducing new transport technologies. Besides consulting key individuals in transport, research and development activities can be offered to other research centers, engineering firms and companies. By conducting cooperative projects and by building up networks, the research and development in this area will be supported and stimulated.
