The training program SAFE-T

A professional vehicle driver should prevent driving in a fatigued state. This requires knowledge about the causes and signs of fatigue and about means to prevent it. As a network activity, training programs under the term "SAFE-T" has been developed to train professional vehicle drivers and schedulers.

SAFE-T stands for

S elf-responsibility (support of own decision making)
A dvice (hints for daily life)
F eedback (learning by doing)
E valuation (evaluation of training success)
T raining (instead of just gaining knowledge)

Training of drivers and managers

Until now two training programs have been developed and evaluated: The "Stay awake at the wheel" training for truck drivers in cooperation with the truck fleet of the Ford Motor Company in Cologne, and a training program for shift workers in cooperation with the Lufthansa AG. Each training has two different parts. First, training of operators, e.g. professional vehicle drivers, in alertness-management, and second, coaching of schedulers using the fatigue prediction program. To achieve stable behavioral changes, well-established methods from behavioral psychology are used in the SAFE-T program.

Areas of application

SAFE-T can be used in different transport areas (e.g. truck-, bus-, train-companies). If you are interested in the "Stay awake at the wheel" training for truck drivers please contact the Berufsgenossenschaft für Fahrzeughaltungen. A trainer manual is also available in book stores. Currently an e-training version for registered users is under development.
