Analysis of fatigue-related accidents

Valid data about the frequency and circumstances of fatigue-related accidents are an important basis for future prevention programs and new legal regulations. Such accidents are very difficult to recognize, however. The driver may not be aware of the fact or willing to admit that he has fallen asleep at the wheel. The latter might be due to the fear of legal consequences. Therefore the police statistics likely underestimates the frequency of accidents caused by a fatigued driver. More research activities are needed to take the special characteristics of fatigue-related accidents into account.
